Captain Frances

I took Frances to the craft store at the beginning of her vacation week before summer camp, and told her to pick something out for herself.  Then I saw a boat kit and picked that out for her, because that's what I wanted.  (Not to worry, she picked out something lovely as well.)  I had this notion that Frances and Sir could sail her ship when Sir came to visit later in the summer.

Back at home, we got to crafting.

With admirable perseverance on the part of Frances, and a fair amount of instructions-ignoring on the part of her parents, the little boat came together.

Unfortunately, I grossly overestimated how much time Sir would have for sailing model boats during his visit.  He hardly made it out of the house, so Frances, Chandler and I took the boat to the Arboretum for its maiden voyage.

While Frances was "napping" one day, she wrote "Pot" on her ship.  And, so, I present H.M.S. Pot.

We explored for a bit, trying to find the best part of the stream.

And, here she goes!

I believe the longest sail lasted about seven seconds, and I can't really imagine her wanting to build another model boat anytime soon, but she was excited enough to want to do it again with her dad, so I'm going to call it a success.  Frances climbed around in the stream and dredged the bottom, all while wearing her poofy dress.  I was quite proud of her.
